People love cats for a variety of reasons the top one being that they are cute. People seem to develop a connection with certain animals too, some people are dog people, others are cat people others yet are snake people! Animals have always been close to humans ever since they were first domesticated, the egyptians worshiped cats as Gods, Bast is the egyptian God of cats for example.
Cats and dogs have a well known and well documented efect on people so much so that there is an active branch of pet doctors who take them to hospitals, especially childrens hospitals and those hospital that deal wth mental illness. The dogs and cats have a calming effect on the patients and have been shown to even benefit their recovery rates.
This does not answer the question of why people love cats though. Cat lovers enjoy the fact that cats are independent, they don't normally fawn over 'their master' as dogs tend to do. My cats sense my moods and will run out of the room when I'm annoyed or bad tempered, my dog will come over and put its head in my lap (which usually annoys me even more as I then have to wipe dribble off my trousers. Dogs love you for however you are, cats love you for your actions.
I honestly believe that the essential difference between a cat person and a dog person is the degree of compliance to the system they show. A dog person tends to comply, a cat person tends to be independent. Neither is a fault nor an accusation, people are different after all.
Bottom line is that you can (to a degree) judge a persons character by their pet.
Dog people: need to be looked after and generally expect others to solve their problems.
cat people: look after others and expect you to be able to solve your own problems.
fish people: are introspective, they keep their own company.
reptile people: are sensual, desire close company and are lustful.
unusual pets (foxes, ferrets, bats, et al): these people love being different and often have a quirky nature.
